Crackled Sugar Cookies

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 cups flour

Directions

  • 1 In large bowl, beat butter and shortening on high for 30 seconds.
  • 2 Add sugar, baking soda, cream of tartar and salt and beat until combined.
  • 3 Beat in egg yolks and vanilla until combined.
  • 4 Mix in flour until well combined.
  • 5 Shape into 1 inch balls and place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets.
  • 6 Bake at 300 degrees for about 20 minutes or until tops are just slightly crackled and sides are set.
  • 7 Do not let edges brown -- if they do they are over done and will not be tender.
  • 8 Transfer to wire rack to cool.
  • 9 May freeze up to 3 months.
